We wandered around 'town' trying to find somewhere doing breakfast, only to give up, buy some yoghurts, etc. from a corner shop & then find a cafe! So our trip didn't end up starting until about 11:30am. However the walk around town was great, seeing real life 'cowboys' in their hats & boots & watching whole families pass by on just one bike! This again, is a town like all the others for the past month or so, laid out in a grid with no road names, one-way signs or give-way signs. We've been fascinated as to how they don't crash as they seem to give way randomly. However Rach thinks she's sussed it with people on Avenidas giving way to people on Calles, no matter where they're going! Very odd, but we'll watch & see if she's right. We caught a taxi out to the Canôn de Somoto & organised our guide. He led us down into the Canyon, where we had to walk across/through a shallow part of the river. As Rach & I thought this was going to be a hike, we'd both worn trainers rather than flip-flops. I went barefoot across the stones, with our guide, kindly giving Rach his sandals. By the next crossing, we'd both said "sod it!" & decided just to soak our trainers. During our walk, we bumped into the 4 guys from our hotel in town, followed by the French Olympian couple from Esteli, all of whom were on their way back. (This might imply that we were late starters or that were a bit lazy, but hey........!) Our guide was great, trying to speak in easy to understand pigeon Spanish as we walked along, crossing through the river another 3 times until we reached a boat. A young lad rowed the 3 of us up through the average paced current, after which we jumped out to swim back. (We could've done the 30m jump off the rocks, but thought better of it!). The current took us half the way back with us swimming the other half, through the reasonably slim canyon walls (at points only 10m apart). Our stroll back dried us out, as did our 1.5 hour in the scorching sun by the side of the road, waiting for a taxi. In the end, a guy just stopped & picked the 4 of us at the bus stop up & squeezed us in his car, making it 8 people in the car (including the one in the open boot!!). Another nights searching for a restaurant led us to a small locals place where a little young American girl was working who kindly explained what we were ordering. It actually tasted lovely & was just what our knackered bodies needed to finish off the day.
