We had a Cigar factory tour planned for today, which we shared with the French guys & about 6 others. It was quite interesting seeing how they dried & straightened the leaves & what leaves they used from where for which part of the cigar. It seems they don't use local leaves for the outer wrapping & instead import those ones from the US & Caribbean. After a couple more rooms seeing (only!) women sorting the leaves into the different shades of colours to make the cigars a uniform colour, we moved onto the rolling room. No health & safety here as we watched them use razor sharp rounded blades with no gloves & a guy chain smoking whilst rolling & compressing a particular type of cigar. There were about 30 odd people rolling, turning out a perfectly rolled cigar between 2 of them approx. every 2-3 minutes. The tour ended after we freely walked around the stockroom & watched the ladies packaging the cigars up for shipment. A 2 hour bus to Somoto followed where we checked into Hotel Panamericano on the main square, just as 4 other guys drove in to check in & drove into the hotel's wall! D'oh! We got our room & as it was already evening, we strolled into town to find all the locals at a funfair on the square & no restaurants open! We did eventually find one place, so quickly ordered, ate & left before they closed as well. Nothing else was open & as the rides looked dodgy & scary, we just went back.
