After reading up yesterday, I decided our best bet wasn't to go from Moin (as the boat ride would've cost us a small fortune!) but instead go from Cariari. So we caught an early bus from Puerto Limon to Guapiles (2 hours), then onto Cariari (1 hour) & then after a couple of hours wait, the 3pm bus to the 'ferry' port (1 hour). The last leg was a little odd, with the bus driver stopping outside a couple of houses along the bumpy road, where the people came out & gave him BIG lumps of cheese, which he sold to the passengers on the bus! The 'ferry' (read covered, shallow long boats) took us down the 'mini-Amazon' for 1.5 hours to Tortuguero village, where we got a place to stay & booked a night tour to see the turtles. Even though our place had some big old frogs & their legs hopping around, we thought we'd get a proper meal, so headed off to a place right over the water, before trying to get our heads down for a couple of hours, even though there seemed to be a very early evening disco next door with their music loud enough to shake our room! Later we headed off on our tour in a small boat down the river to 'Section 2'. One kms walk in the dark from where the boat dropped us & we came to a 3-4 foot turtle in her hole, laying eggs. She'd already laid about 80 eggs & we watched her 'pop out' (literally!) another 20+. She then began using her strong back flippers to bury the eggs in sand, closely followed by using her front flippers to help, flicking sand everywhere, including in Rach's eye, as we were obviously standing a bit too close. (I might just add that there were strict rules to not disturb these green turtles, including no cameras & the guides only used red night lights). As the turtle was going to take about 15-20mins to fill in her hole, we headed down the beach to where another one had just finished covering her eggs & we followed her as she headed down the beach to the sea & swim off. Seeing these turtles was fantastic & well worth the long trip to Tortuguero. We got back in the boat & while watching the lightning storms in the distance all around us, headed back to the village. However just before we arrived back, the power went out in the whole village leaving us & them in darkness, but enabling us through the gaps in the clouds to see the Milky Way with the lack of light pollution. We got back at midnight & crashed out.
