To recap on the last few days:
Lorin and I headed to Camden to go see some live music. Apparently 'live' music means a regular club with a DJ. lol. So we go into this club and are wearing our backpacks...which we both thought was hilarious and made a backpack dance. We had just finished agreeing that 80's music was our least favorite era. And where do we end up? At an 80's Jazz Club. haha. We decided to leave and get some fish and chips (signature dish in England!) and they were DELISH! We were both exhausted and decided to go to our hostels to bed!
While I was in the wifi room at the hostel, there was this creepy old man who wanted to sit by me and talk to me. A fellow Canadian guy could tell I was getting creeped out so asked if I wanted to play pool in the hostel lounge. David is a lifesaver! When you are travelling you always seem to stay up wayyy later than you want. But the tradeoff is meeting cool people!
I survived my night in the gungy, sketchy hostel (obviously haha) and booked it out of there the next morning to the YHA hostel in Central London. Lorin and I booked there for the next two nights. The rooms were so nice! That morning on my way there lugging my backpack I met a cool Aussie (Kim) and we decided to meet up later. I headed to Oxford to check out the shopping scene. I loved ALL the clothes! But unfortunately, when you are backpacking you can't fit much (and don't want to weigh your backpack down even MORE!) and can't look cute very often! On my way there I popped into a cool looking church and sat in on the service! I'm impressed - made it to church on my first Sunday here! I met up with the lovely Louise Simmonds in Oxford!
Lorin, Kim and I walked through Regent's Park and did cartwheels and then headed back to the hostel, where Lorin brought out his guitar and harmonicas, serenading Kim, me, Zoe and Kelli (2 fellow Canadians!).
23rd: Lorin, Kim and I toured Westminster Abbey - which is SO lovely and amazing and beautiful! Worth 16 pounds! We went to Abbey Road next and saw the Beatles' recording studio. However, it wasn't nearly as exciting as I anticipated. Of course we had to take our Abbey Road picture but there was lots of traffic! Then we headed to Picadilly to see.....SINGING IN THE RAIN! Ahhh! It was amazing! They ACTUALLY have rain!
My conclusions of London:
1. London is really clean!
2. There is amazing architecture on every corner!
3. People are super friendly and helpful.
4. People love their bulldogs
5. People run ALL the time. With backpacks.
6. People are very stylish!
25th: I was having a hard time deciding where to go from London, sooo I went on a tour: Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath! All three places were quite lovely! It rained ALL day and my bare shins were cold! Did you know that Stonehenge was used as a calendar? Pythagoras Theory was used 1000's of years before he was even born! Henge = hanging. Stonehenge= Hanging Stone. Who'da thought? Although it's only a pile of rocks in a field, it was very cool to see! :)
Off we went to Bath. The English countryside is so beautiful! Our tour guide gave us a free walking tour around there. We saw Bath Spa (similar to Radium Hot Springs - hence why it's named Bath)- a natural hot springs, walked past Jane Austen's museum (no time to go in!) and saw the Royal Crescent (which wasn't too exciting haha). It seemed like each time you went to fold up your umbrella...it would start to rain again! I ditched my tour (they were headed back to London) and waited for a coach to Bristol (where I would coach overnight to Cork, Ireland). I was looking for the hostel there to drop my pack. Of course...it starts to pour. I had been milking my crappy I
