Our flight into Fiji arrived at 4am, was not the best feeling getting off a flight at that time! It was pitch black still so couldn’t really get a first look at Fiji! We arrived at our hostel, which was more of a hotel really, nice bar, pool, shop and an internet room! We couldn’t check into our room until midday though so ended up sleeping on the sofas on reception!! We checked into our room and went and made the most of the sun so lay next to the pool and went for a dip a few times!! We booked to stay for 4 nights on Robinson Crusoe Island to the South West of Naviti, the main island. The day after we set off for Robinson Crusoe Island and our first taste of real island life, it was quite a shock to the system too! We pulled up to the island on the boat and were greeted by a group of island residents welcoming us to the island in song! We all had to shout “Bula!” to them as we pulled up, we were shown to our dorm – 40 beds in one room! Next we were told about the showers – not what we were expecting, they consisted of a bucket of cold water hoisted above your head and had a tap on the bottom to let the water out! Not the best shower ever and they were absolutely freezing!! After being shown around the island we all got lunch before going and getting changed into our swim-stuff and grabbing a kayak each to go for a paddle round the island! Chris made a name for himself within 30 seconds by falling out of the kayak whilst trying to get in it in front of everyone on the beach! Was great fun kayaking around the island even though it started to rain whilst we were out there, rain was pretty much the theme of our time in Fiji, think we had only 3 days when it didn’t rain!! After getting changed out of our swimwear we had our kava ceremony to welcome us to Robinson Crusoe Island and we became official residents of Robinson Crusoe Island! The Kava tasted horrible, just like muddy water and it also made your tongue numb if you drank more than one bowl!! The rest of our time on Robinson Crusoe was spent drinking basically, we got to know a group of people and spent the evenings playing numerous drinking games until the lights went out at midnight when the generator turned off! Even then we just sat in the dark drinking more!! During the daytime we went kayaking quite a lot and also played volleyball, went hand-line fishing, sat in the hammocks and one day took part in island survivor, a series of games, which our team won!! Before we knew it our time on Robinson Crusoe was up and we got the boat back to the mainland and then to Skylodge! We spent a night there before getting the Yasawa Flyer up the Yasawa Islands to Tavewa Island where we stayed at David’s Place resort – possibly the worst hellhole on earth!!! Was dire! There we went to see the caves, which were good fun apart from the sea lice, which kept biting you!! From David’s Place we went to Beachcomber Island, the party island, the first thing we saw as we were shown the 120 bed dorm were Helen, Michael, Steve (know to us as Kurt Cobain!) and Zoë who we’d met on Robinson Crusoe so we felt at home straight away! We developed a habit on Beachcomber of sleeping through the daytime, due to the rain, and then getting up at lunchtime, going swimming, playing crazy golf or playing volleyball in the afternoon and then drinking from happy hour, 5 pm, until around 3am when we’d get into bed!! Had such a great time on Beachcomber and had some amazing nights drinking, playing even more drinking games such as arrogance and ring of fire! Once our time on Beachcomber was up we got the boat back to the mainland and stayed at Skylodge another 2 nights before getting our flight on to New Zealand! Whilst back at the Skylodge we celebrated both Si’s 21st birthday and also Steve’s last night of travelling after being away for over a year!! After having a couple of drinks to celebrate it was time for us to get the shuttle to the airport as our time in Fiji was up!
