Started off the day by doing a 6 km walk uphill in 30 degrees. Tempted by a tempoary village bar on the way but answered to the sensible voice!
What a day realised that most of the previous tours had mostly cycled to the viewing point and never been to a major climb. This was going to be a different experience the last climb of the day and literally thousands of people and many were camping at the roadside in tents, cars and vans.
The caravan was interesting but similar to my previous experiences - but the spectators basically closed the road and like wave opened in front of the vehicles and cyclists-well only just...! To the annoyance of several lead cyclists. Folk were diving for freebies like it was the last bread loaf in the world.
Parked myself with a bunch of Aussies and Spanish who were well crazy to say the very least, they booed the police when they drove past totally anti authoritarian. They also got very hands in with the struggling cyclists at the rear and pushed them uphill some even ran for several hundred metres pushing a competitor who was out the back of the field. The Aussies booed Wiggins when he passed and asked about my pommie accent! Who was I rooting for? I told them I can switch sides depending on how either country is doing (cause I can...) brave comment in that company (Wiggins not all that popular!).
The long walk back in the sun was going to be rewarded by a cool beer! Arrived at our village bar disaster as they were fixing the beer machine. The enterprising guys had it fixed quickly- oh how good that tasted...just reward after a fantastic day...
Tomorrow will be different again as in the VIP guest area hosted by the New Orica Green Edge Australian Cycling team.
