We had 2 great days in this lovely old city. It is amazing to see what restoration has taken place after the bombing in the war in 1991-92. Over 2000 bombs and shells were launched into Dubrovnik but you wouldn't believe it, except when you walk around the walls and see all the new red tiled roofs which have been replaced. Our accommodation, thanks to John & Julie was a perfect location, right at the Ploce gate, and our landlord was most interesting (odd?), however he gave us a guided tour of the old city, indicated some good places to eat, organised our accommodation and transport on to Korcula and was generally very helpful.
We did the self guided tour of the city walls about 2 kilometres up and down over towers etc, about 1/3 of the walls are on the water side, the rest protected by a moat, it would have been a very hard fort to capture. We must have been just about the only tourists as only local bars and restaurants were open. This was quite good as we were able to eat with the locals and were not ripped off. On the last day we had our lunch and a beer in the sun overlooking the fort and the harbour. What a magic place, even in season there would be places to sit and relax without touts, tavernas, cars motor bikes etc.
