OK, well, we have made it back to the States. I am so thankful and blessed to have been part of this wonderful experience. The only phrase that comes to mind is, "There's No Place like Home." As I say the phrase I see it as two-fold meanings.
My trip to Africa is to an ancestry home that showed me relatives long before that I was never expected to see again. In spite of the tragedy of Human Slave Trade, I walked back through the Door of No Return and entered by way of the Door of Return. I saw my family in Africa and the experience has forever changed me so that I can see the dignity, love, and worth of people. I can also see that the picture the world has painted is not the one I should accept. As they Ghanaian people themselves stated, "We do not swing on trees, live barbarically; we are educated, dignified, loving people." I have seen for myself what pride and connection exists at home. I also know all is not perfect, but I am filled with pleasure to know that they are a people with whom I am connected
As I return to my home of America in the USA, I have a new appreciation for my family here, my heritage that has been built since brought here, one that also exudes love and dignity but starts from a different point, one that knows that all men and women are of equal worth—in spite of how history depicts us or how social/institutional patterns unfold. My family home here succeeds ""in spite of" obstacles, while my family members in my homeland succeed "because of the greatness of their spirit."
When I realize that the homeland spirit has been the African strand that has been passed along from generation to generation, in spite of attacks of social norms, I realize our connection and need for more opportunities for connection is what this trip highlights.
Never forget your greatness of sprit since it is your inheritance!
