One hour Stopover Gold Coast
The flight to Kuala Lumpur left on schedule and took 2 hours 15 minutes. On arriving in Kuala Lumpur we had to collect our bags and go through passport control and customs. This didn't take too long, although we had an onward flight it was booked separately so we had to enter Malaysia with a visitor visa before we left it again a few hours later.
We didn't realise how HUGE Kuala Lumpur airport was as we planned on eating here before our next flight, and we started looking for somewhere nice to eat. In a large shopping area we found a food hall. Obviously a lot of the food outlets had Malaysian food, which looks scrummy in the photos outside, however doesn't always look quite so appealing when you go inside, as it sits in large platters waiting to be scooped up or in a large bubbling pan being ladled out (and sometimes is still swimming around in a tank). The result is never the same attractive dish in the picture. So after a bit more wandering and trying to decide I am ashamed to say we ended up in Burger King. Two "whoppers" with chips and a coke later we felt human again and ready for the next leg of our journey.
We found the check in ok and dropped off our bags which made it a lot easier. Our gate was P25 so we started walking. Several minutes later we were still walking or in my case hobbling, when a nice man in an electric buggy stopped to give us a lift. I have now decided that this is the only way to negotiate an airport as we were sped along the corridor hooting everyone out of the way. The buggy kept going and going until it finally stopped at a lift where we had to change floors. At the pace we were hopping it would have taken us a lot longer. But we still weren't at our gate even then we had more corridors to transverse and our bags scanned twice before we eventually arrived at our gate. It was a relief to sit down and charge our batteries (literally as my phone and kindle were plugged into a handy socket) before the gate opened. At 10.10 the gate opened and we were queing to enter for some reason when we realised that airport security were checking everyone's boarding passes and passports again before we were allowed to fly. When it came to our turn they wanted to know where we had been, how long we were going to stay in New Zealand and where we were going when we left New Zealand. They asked to see proof of our onward flight which I just managed to find eventually on my phone. Many countries require proof of departure before letting you in, but we had already shown this proof when we checked in our baggage, so I am not sure why we had this extra security check, but in a way it was quite reassuring. We were flying by airbus so the checks took a long time with so many people. Our flight eventually took off almost on time and we settled into our seats at the back of the plane and then spent the next 7 hours trying to sleep before our stoppover in Australia for refueling.
