Adventures of a Global Wanderer
At Aksaray Metro I decided to take the train back to the bus station as we arrived at the wrong side yesterday and I wanted to see all the destination signs back to the places in the Balkans I had just visited.
Metro fare was 3TL ($1.50) and it was a few stops to the Otogar bus terminal metro station. I remember in 2007 seeing signs for Kosovo and Bulgaria so wanted to find them again.
They had Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia. There is even a bus now to Sarajevo Bosnia but that must be a hellish ride with so many border crossings and who knows how many hours.
Now I wanted to eat as the midday heat was coming up and I hadn't had much not having any money this morning. They were selling donar kebabs for 2TL ($1) but I didn't want to eat it this early for what would be my breakfast
I decided to goto a restaurant inside the terminal, not the ones with outdoor seating that would be more expensive. I ordered just a lamb vegetable curry and ate it with bread instead of ordering rice.
When he gave me the bill it was 20TL ($10). I was shocked. I had a big meal yesterday with rice for only 4.75TL and they are selling donars next door for only 2TL. Obviously he took one look at my face and decided to make up a price, on a handwritten slip, and could be pocketing the rest.
I wasn't in a mood to argue. If you want to rip me off go ahead. It just leaves a bad image and will make me just want to buy donars for 2TL in future. This was just a place inside the bus terminal not some posh fancy restaurant.
I have to start asking 'how much' in future. The last two times in Istanbul it wasn't like this and that's twice now with the cab driver yesterday and now this bus terminal joint.
