Adventures of a Global Wanderer
It was now early afternoon and I needed some food. Everywhere they are selling grilled meat sandwiches. I had the same problem in Bosnia and my stomach cant handle this everyday. I ended up getting really sick for a few days during that Bosnia trip. This seems to be the only food you can buy.
All the pizza has ham on it as do most sandwiches. Eventually I found a tuna sandwich in footlong baked flatbread for 140D ($1.70). Now I tried to find the Archaeological Museum to use my combo ticket and see more Roman stuff as the museum at Medijana was closed.
It was a small building and had exhibits in the hall. There were the usual Roman busts, some jewellery, coins, pottery, and bronze age implements.
Finally I wanted to visit the Orthodox Cathedral. It was a few streets over from the end of the pedestrian street.
From the outside it looks like ‘yeah, just another church’ but once you step in you are completely amazed. It looked like an art gallery and like something Michaelangelo had painted. Every single surface was covered with a different work of art.
Each of the domes had art inside the dome as well as the outer dome curve. There were so many domes and so many things to look at.
Some were of Christ, some were of Saints, Kings, Princes, Monks and Bishops, scenes from heaven, villagers, Church construction. It was really amazing and worth spending time absorbing. It reminded me of a Korean temple the level of painstaking detail that had gone into the artwork
I then saw there was an upper terrace and stairs leading up. From the upper terrace you see even more not visible from the ground level. You are seeing inside the upper domes from a different angle so seeing more stuff not visible before.
Outside the church was another building with a more modern chapel inside. Along the sides were display cases with various rings and necklaces
Then I noticed soldiers outside and the Monk chatting with them. They had handguns with them so not sure what they are doing here as I’m not aware of any tensions at this church or region.
Then I went for a final walk around the town centre. The Mosque was still locked so I never got to go in. The city was very relaxed with lots of people out strolling and reminded me a bit of Sarajevo (my favourite Yugoslav city).
I had a nice two days stay, fantastic hotel, warm and comfy, except for continued wifi problems, and the weather is slowly warming back to normal
