Adventures of a Global Wanderer
The rain was scheduled to clear out today but the skies were still grey with clouds. I was looking forward to a hot shower again but this time the water was cold. When I called the guy he said I had to turn the boiler on and wait half an hour.
I waited about 15 mins as I didn't have half an hour and it was marginally better. At least the room didn't flood the luggage today which I had placed on the bed as a precaution.
Today I had booked a Belgrade underground tour for 12 euros ($15). It lasts about three hours and I needed to be at the start place at 10am. Also it will keep me out of any passing rain. There was still heavy drizzle so the rain wasn't clearing out yet.
The first place we went to was the city library. When renovating they had discovered Roman remains in the basement. The city is built on an original Roman town.
In the basement we saw some brickwork and a pipe from an aqueduct that stretches about 12 km. They used white stone and the original name of Belgrade was white city due to the colour of the original fortress
Next we went into the big park that has the city fortress. It was a good job I didn't come yesterday as we ended up exploring most of the fortress as well.
First we passed by a white monument from the 19th century showing when the Turks surrendered the city. The Turks had captured Belgrade for about 500 years although it changed hands between the Turks and Austrians during that time a few times
The Turks set up base in the fortress while the Austrians setup home in a small town called Zemun on the other side of the Sava River. Zemun is now part of Belgrade city and I planned to visit it later
The original Turkish gates are still there and there are pens for holding prisoners as you go thru the gates. There is also a Military Museum which I was thinking about visiting later. It was also called the Tanbul gate as the road went directly to Istanbul
After passing by a Turkish Tomb we went to an underground bunker built by Tito fearing WWIII and a Russian invasion. This bunker remained a secret until recently discovered
Then we travelled to another side of the fortress and went down to its base. Here behind a gate was a cavern with lots of Roman gravestones and tombs.
This hall was used as a dance club in the 1990s. There was an altar stone which was used by the DJ as his turntable.
Down at street level we came to some wine cellars that were discovered. People would hide food and other supplies down here. Now they are in poor repair but are slowly being turned into tourist wine cellars
Finally we went to another wine cellar for some wine tasting. My camera started to malfunction crazily. It wouldn't take pics, kept going to max zoom and going into record mode. It wouldn't let me review or delete pics and all the keys were dead.
I tried taking the battery and card out to reboot it but it was still dead. I was debating if I have to buy a new camera now as I still have two weeks of travel left.
Fortunately the camera fixed itself for some strange reason. This camera is slowly dying and has seen heavy use in all my trips since I got it Aug 2012. I just need it to last till the end of this trip then I can replace it when I get home.
