Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today was Easter Sunday and I'd left the day clear from all the day trips to give myself a rest and see how the locals celebrate easter in a more religious country. I'd plan to visit some museums north of the town centre and it was too hot to walk.
The older Japanese guy from my hotel had the same plan so we took the bus together. After mixed advice waiting on a street corner we found the bus for 7P ($0.50).
For the holiday the main north-south boulevard Paseo de Montejo had been closed to traffic and was open to bikes and rollerblades. I looked for a place to rent a bike and was able to for $1 USD/hr.
Saving myself from walking in the heat, a high of 38 degrees again today, I was able to pedal to many of the places I wanted to visit. At the top of Paseo de Montejo is the Independence Monument which is two sided.
Biking down Paseo de Montejo were many grand European style mansions. One was a private family home open to public visits but was closed for the weekend due to the Easter weekend.
Several of the old town streets had also been closed the closer I got to the centre so I was able to bike all the way to the main square Plaza Grande. Many vendors had been setup there so it was difficult to move and quite hot now aside from biking.
I had to bike back before my hour was up so that I wouldnt have to pay extra.
If it wasnt so hot I could have biked a bit longer and it was only 11am. Although I've never been to Cuba all the old building architecture was how I imagined Havana.
After returning the bike I went to the Regional Museum which was open today. Entrance was 55P ($4.25). Despite the building size it was only one section of the ground floor.
There was an exhibit of Guatemalan dress.
The interior architecture was also nice although we could only see one section of the ground floor.
It was hot so I made my way back to the hotel. I stopped by some churches to see Easter service on the way.
A vendor was selling some stacked fruit cup for 15P ($1) sprinkled with spice so I took that for lunch. I was back in the hotel by 12 but some of the fruit tasted like vegetables so I couldnt eat them.
After 230pm I left the hotel to look for the City Museum by my hotel but it was closed today. I ended up at KFC to get a meal and got a 3pc box for 87P ($6.70). What I thought was ketchup was strawberry sauce for some reason after I put it all over my fries!
Rest of the day I lazed and tried the hotel pool again.
