Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today was my last full day and I had booked a more leisurely trip to Celestun to see the flamingos which wouldnt be as tiring with much walking. My legs had been hurting from climbing the grand pyramid at Uxmal two days earlier.
For today's trip was the older Japanese guy from my hotel again. We also picked up an older Australian guy and a Mexican family with an adult son.
After an hours drive to the coast we boarded a small launch boat to see the flamingos. It was very breezy and much cooler out on the waters with today's high 38 degrees again.
The brochures show thousands of flamingos across the horizon. We only had a few dozen due to the season. They were dipping their heads in and feeding.
The gathered boats probably took more room than the group of flamingos. The tour groups crowded round for a view.
The Mexican family had been translating for us as the boat driver explained the habitat in Spanish.
I would have liked to have stayed longer but the boat then speed off and into the mangrove.
Now it became more like a Disney ride as the boat slowly moved thru the natural tunnel of branches. Termites nest on the branches.
We then docked and went for a walk further in. A boardwalk has been constructed in a loop around a natural cenote.
Many were taking the time to jump in an cool down in the clear waters in amongst the fish and other natural life.
It would have been a nice place to cool down but again I didnt know there was going to be a cenote so didnt bring a towel or any clothing.
Before heading to the bus I stopped to get some souvenirs as I hadnt had much chance to shop on this trip with sparse souvenirs since Chichen Itza.
For lunch we went to a seafront restaurant. First we had a cool fish salad for starters. The main dish was fish coated in peanuts with rice.
We then had 90 mins freetime on the beach, a nice way to relax on my final afternoon. It was still baking heat in the late afternoon so not somewhere I could spend a long time outdoors. The good thing is there were no westerners here.
The Mexican family also bought desserts for us all from a local vendor. All in all a nice final trip to round my week in Yucatan.
