Adventures of a Global Wanderer
There was another museum on my map, a Bukit Military Museum but it was too far to walk in this heat so I tried a tuk tuk. We agreed to 20,000IDR ($2) and we went off.
He kept heading north to the train station and I was wondering where he was going as he needed to go west. Eventually we made it Bukit St by the station and he pulled over. I showed him on the map the Bukit Museum is on a different street further west so now he understood.
I was hoping he wouldnt charge me extra for his mistake but he only asked for the 20,000IDR.
There was not much to see in the museum and the attendant who was surprised to see someone here said he didnt have the key to the upstairs.
Just across was a big shopping mall where I could cool down and get something to drink. Prices are cheap and I got a drink for 3000IDR (.30 cents).
Opposite was a Hindu Temple with gold carvings but it was closed to the public. I made my way to a large Chinese temple in what is the city's small Indian quarter selling sari's.
The temple doesnt seem to get tourists either so I asked it if was ok to go in. The temple was quite large and similar to other Chinese or Taiwanese Temples.
I then took another tuk tuk back home to the Masjid Reya for another 20,000IDR ($2). After falling asleep in the hotel till 4pm I went out looking for food.
I was thinking of calling the strange guy I had met on the airport train to ask it he wanted to meet but it was late now as I wanted an early night for my very early morning train back to the airport.
I ordered a 2 piece chicken with rice, drink, and hot sauce ketchup for 37,000IDR ($3.70). I then got some snacks for tomorrows journey and breakfast for another 15,000IDR ($1.50) which included two water bottles and four other food items.
I was looking for sandals again but the sizes stop just below mine. Eventually I found one a size smaller for 50,000IDR ($5). They had lots of great tshirts for 30,000IDR ($3) but when I tried them on they were all too small.
It would have been nice to have stayed longer in Medan and it was originally my plan to spend the next day there also. But my flight leaving from Singapore was at night and I was scared if I took an evening flight to connect me there may be a storm causing me to miss my connection back to Korea on another airline.
Instead I chose a morning flight to Singapore which would give me the day to explore and I wouldnt need to pay for an expensive nights accommodation in Singapore either.
There are some nice temples further out from the city centre and Lake Toba and further in the country which was four hours each way. The air was also bad with pollution. I was in my hotel by 6pm and just watched some movies before falling asleep.
