Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Having settled into my apartment sunday morning I was deciding whether to just take it easy or squeeze one more day trip. I decided to goto Gyor 90 mins by train as I don't know what the schedule will be like once I start the course and I'm hearing you wont have free weekends for stuff like this
I'm using the same paper instructions the guy at the hostel wrote for me and just changing the name of the city each time. Ticket price was 2800Ft ($14) one way.
This was a RailJet intercity train running from Budapest>Gyor>Vienna>Salzburg& gt;Munich. The train was very modern and full of Germans and Austrians returning home for the weekend or at the end of their trip. I as lucky I had a seat as lots of people were sitting in the aisles or between carriages.
Gyor is a border town on the Slovak and Austrian border so was more under the Austrian sphere of influence. Its more like visiting a small Austrian town. Again there was no tourist info so I just followed the town map and had looked up where to go on google maps before
City Hall is by the train station and I followed the road north until I reached the Basilica thru the old town streets. There was no-one checking for entrance like in other towns and it was a vast interior with lots of large gold figures all over
It also houses a famous gold head which has a story behind it and has been rescued a few times.
At first I was wondering if I made a wasted trip as most places seemed to be closed on Sunday. Then I found a ticket office where I could get a combo ticket to seven places for 1000Ft ($5). Its cheaper to get the combo then to pay individually
They said to goto the Treasury first as it would be closing at 4 but I stopped at some places along the way as the buildings are all near each other situated around the basilica
The Treasury building also housed the Library of Gyor which was impressive. I wasn't able to take pics in the baroque library in Eger so I took some here even though it was not allowed.
They also had papal gowns and church relics as well as CD sized giant coins.
Finally I made my way back to the Tower of Saints from where I had bought my combo ticket.
Here you could climb the staircase for a city view. At the top of the staircase you had to go up an additional spiral staircase to get to the windows.
The was then a second longer spiral staircase to take you to the outdoor viewing area. I know I wouldnt be able to climb it and make down as I dont like heights and couuld already see out the windows
Back in town I made it to the main town square which was a large plaza with restaurants and cafes along one side. Then back to the town hall to reach the station
The train back was nowhere near as crowded and almost empty. I tried to take the subway home but for some reason all the vending machines at all stations are broken. I had to stand in a 30 person long line just ot pay 350Ft ($1.75) for a single journey ticket
Now the course will be starting and I dont think I can do much for the next four weeks.
