Adventures of a Global Wanderer
At the eastern end of the city is the famous landmark of Thessaloniki, the White Tower. This was built by the Ottomans for defence when Salonica (Thessaloniki) was an in important trading port.
With all the walking I was going to do each day I decided not to pay to go inside and climb all the stairs to the top. I had already been having knee problems a day or two back.
A few blocks further was the Archaeological Museum. I was debating if it wanted to walk that far and back as I'd done a lot of walking. But the heat was getting quite back so I decided to go and hide out inside for about an hour.
Behind the Archaeological Museum is the Byzantine Museum. Entrance to each is 6 + 4 Euros, or you can get a combo ticket for 8 Euros ($12) which I did.
There were lots of Greek sculptures, pottery, gold, and mosiacs.
A block behind was the Byzantine Museum. This had lots of Christian art as well as early painted Christian tombs.
Heading back in the heat I tried to goto the Haga Sophia Church but it closes from 1pm-6pm. I hadnt really had any proper food today so got a burger for 2.50 Eu ($3.25) plus drink 1.20 Eu ($1.80), quite cheap, and gave me some much needed energy before heading back to the hotel to rest and get out of the sun.
