Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today's day trip was to take me to the western coastal city of Turku, Finlands former capital. It was a 2 hr bus ride and I had already bought discount bus tickets ahead of my trip.
The bus was empty this time and I got the front window seat on the top deck so able to admire the view. We had clear skies again today. One guy talked on his cell the entire 2 hour trip!
The bus arrives at the university campus just outside the town centre, unlike the more expensive train which goes closer to the centre. I was to walk to the Cathedral so navigated myself thru the campus based on the Cathedral tower.
Inside the Cathedral were royal tombs. I don't know enough about Finland history as to who they were. Possibly Swedish Kings as I don't think Finland had a monarchy of its own
Now I had to navigate myself to the castle which was a straight walk along the river. It looked easy enough on the map but took about 40 mins to walk the distance. Entrance to the castle was 9 Eu ($12)
I arrived at 12.10 and my return bus was 2pm so I had to leave by 12.30 to make the long walk back to the other side of town for the bus back. The castle actually had quite a bit to see and shouldn't be rushed.
There were grand halls, gowns, a throne, and a chapel, as well as jewels and glass ceramics.
There was lots to see and I rushed thru leaving by 12.40 due to my 2pm return bus. It was an online ticket and the next bus was 4pm two hours later so not that easy to change.
I had to speed walk and jog back to make it to the town centre, get something to eat, and back at the other side of town for the bus at 2pm.
I got another Hessburger combo for 7.90 Eu ($12). Near the market square was also an Orthodox Church but it was locked.
They were selling fresh produce and flowers in the main square which was the hub of the town where many of the buses congregate.
I had to navigate the river back to the bus and just made it by 1.50. There was a big crowd and I didn't get the front window seat again. I could rest after my long walk and rushing for the two hour ride back.
