Adventures of a Global Wanderer
I'd been to Copenhagen before in 2003 so this time I was just using it as a hotel stop and planning to do trips outside the city with my rail pass. I'd seen a documentary about Denmark's Water Castles when I was living in Korea so I was hoping to visit two of the most famous and largest ones outside of Copenhagen.
Rather ambitiously the second one takes me to the Sweden border. So I was hoping to take the ferry across and continue down the Swedish side to the border town of Malmo just so that I can have a taste of Sweden which I also hadn't been to since 2003.
It was going to be a tight schedule and I did consider an overnight hotel in Malmo but they were outrageously starting at $150 and I'd have to carry my luggage all day.
Breakfast in the hotel started from 8am and there were warm freshly baked rolls and other items. The rain was quite heavy as I left and walked to Central Station. I didn't know my rail pass actually worked from the station I was at, Norreport, as this is a regional commuter station as well as a metro station.
I passed by familiar sights like the Round Tower as I made my way to City Hall. I had to hide in the Cathedral for a period as the rain was so bad. The rain seems to follow me when I travel and this just seems to be my luck.
Copenhagen was scheduled to be sunny for three days until I arrived. Its amazing how I have the power to blanket an entire region with rain every time I travel.
I'd got a pasta from 7-11 for 25K ($5) to stock up and went to my platform. I was taking the train to Hillerod from where Fredericksborg Castle is a short walk.
Journey was 45 mins on this commuter train and it was interesting how this had been converted to a bike train as there was a carriage full of people bringing their bikes. There was also supposed to be free wifi but you needed to sign in with your ID which I didn't have.
The castle is about a 10 min walk taking you thru the towns main street. The rain was coming very strong.
Entrance was 75K ($15). It was good to get out of the rain but I wouldn't be able to see any of the gardens in this weather.
The palace was very grand an impressive. There were no rules about photos as there are in some musuems but I kept my flash off.
This was how a King should live as I admired the grandeur.
When I left the rain was coming at max shower force as I returned to the station for my next stop
