Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Continuing my day exploring Guangzhou I took the Metro to Chen Jia Ci station for the temple of the same name. The heat was still baking.
For some reason there was a massive line snaking in the baking heat for several hundred metres. There must have been some significance to this temple as the others had no line ups but I wasnt going to stand in line so just skipped this and went back in the metro to the next temple on my list.
Hualin Si is the first temple I tried to find yesterday but it had already closed at 5pm. Thinking this would just be another temple this one was unique in its corridors of gold Buddhas each with individual characteristics.
There were outer and inner corridors lined with Buddhas leading to different shrines.
The grounds were decorated with flag lines and there were some monks.
I needed to buy another 24 hour metro card as my first one from the airport had now expired. I went across to the Peasant Movement Institute.
This was an old Confucian Temple used by Mao Tse Tsung and early revolutionaries in their study and training. Their living quarters can still be seen.
Just outside to the left was the City God Temple I was getting too tired to walk just to look at another temple so was saving my energy.
A short distance was the Nan Yue Palace Gardens. This had free entry.
It was a large excavated pit with elevated walkways similar to the Terra Cotta Warriors pit in Xian. The grounds also had stones marked by different grass types.
The complex was large and had other pits in smaller buildings. There was also a large museum.
It was divided into three wings on each side of the building for a total of six wings. I was getting quite exhausted from all the walking today and needed energy.
There was supposed to be a Chinese Mosque near here but I had no energy to look for it. I stumbled onto Beijing Road which is a pedestrian street with some covered excavations under glass.
I then needed dinner and went back to the Uyghar restaurant for much needed energy. For my final event I went back to Xiajiu Lu the main pedestrian street. Coming from the metro it was the start of the street and cars were still pushing their way thru before the official pedestrian section began.
I found a boxed cookie store selling mooncakes which I got as gifts. Then I needed to get back to my hotel and pass out.
On tv they said this was a 3 day holiday explaining the discounts and free admissions today. Also it was a good job I didnt go to Shenzhen or I could have got stuck in all the crowds trying to get there and back. You need at least 2 days to explore Guangzhou proper and I didnt even make it to the Pearl River or the Canton Tower.
