Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Today was my second full day in China and last day before I depart home tomorrow. My plan had been to take a high speed train to Shenzhen on the Hong Kong border to explore some theme parks. However, I had been delayed getting into Guangzhou by the visa process at the airport, the metro from the airport was slow taking an hour, the scale on my map was wrong and things were much further then they appeared.
I decided to skip Shenzhen as I can go there anytime from Hong Kong. When I renew my passport in 2017 I plan on getting the 10 year China visa so I can go back and forth anytime.
A short walk from Orchard Gardens and the Islamic Cemetery (see previous entry) was the Nan Yue Tomb. There was a long line outside in the heat for tickets but it moved quickly. Entrance was 12Y but today they only charged 10Y ($2).
Aside from usual artifacts there was a section on painted stone pillows. I'm not sure how comfortable it would be sleeping on a stone no matter how nice they decorate it.
On the roof were the excavations which you would expect to be on the bottom. There wasnt much to see in the caverns as the artifacts are all in the museum. The heat was also quite strong outdoors.
There was another wing of the museum on the roof and an escape from the heat. It showed more items from the kingdom and the decorated body caskets people were buried in.
Next I took the metro one more stop down to Sun Yat Sen Memorial Station.
This was easy to find right by the station. The grounds are free and entrance to the building is 10Y ($2). Impressed by the architecture I decided to buy a ticket. Good job as the heat was getting quite bad so some shade to escape.
The interior was just an auditorium so no museum or anything much else to do.
In the large park behind somewhere was the Five Rams statue. I didnt want to walk around in the heat outdoors trying to find it but found a picture of it. I took the metro down one more stop and got a lolly to cool down. It was nice and filled with fruit and creme.
Around the temple area were lots of shop selling religious items. In retrospect I should have looked but I was on a tight schedule and running.
I found the Lui Rong Si temple complex which had free admission today for some reason. I'm not sure what was going on today as all tickets were discounted or free so far.
The main feature of the temple is its tall pagoda about 8 stories high. You can climb up but today it was closed. The rest of the temple was also interesting with various shrines.
Nearby I had to navigate my way to Guangxiao Si a couple of blocks back which also had free entry. I had come from the side entrance not the main gate hence the difficulty finding it.
The complex was interesting with a variety of shrines. In the Sleeping Buddha people were walking in circular patterns chanting. Some foreigners thought it would be fun to join in and act silly.
The main hall had three gold buddha's but they didnt want pics inside. As I went south there was the main gate I was supposed to come thru.
There was a lot to see in this bustling city but I needed to look for some food and get out of the heat.
