Last night Josh arrived and we decided to go across the street for a beer around 23:00. Football on TV, England-Belgium and found out that Holland-N.Ireland would be on at 2am local time. Was quite in the mood for a football match so we had a few more beers in a few more bars and watched the match first from a club with a great live band and later from the corner bar. This bar didnt sell beer, so got the beers from another place and ordered food here while watching the last part of the match. Holland wins 6-0 and next week the tournement starts, cant wait! Had a real good laugh this evening, was fun.
Waking up close to 10am, we are going to Niah National Park to check out the caves. It's a 110 km drive, the roads are in good shape, make it in abt 90 minutes. Had lunch there first, fried noodles, and then took a small boat across the river to start the hike. The trail is a plankway and well made and goes through nearly 3 km of primary rainforest. On the way we see rivers, caves, huge tapang trees, butterflies, a flying squirel, tropical rain forest, green, green, green! You first enter the Trader's Cave through a kind of semi-open dome, used to be under the sea. Very impressive and walking on you reach the main Great Cave. It is truely massive and hard to guess the dimensions. Here more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niah_National_Park. It reaches about 75 meters high and Up to 250 meters wide, we walked around in it for quite a while. Light falls in through holes in the roof, and once your eyes get used to the dark, you realise how immensely huge this cave is. millions of bats can be heard over your head and in the deep dark people are collection the guano, bat droppings. Going through the Burnt Cave and the Moon Cave you see luminous fungi. All in all very impressive stuff. Slowly walked through all the caves, it was very warm and damp. Walked through the jungle out over the plankway and made it back to the car. Drove to town, had dinner and thats it really. Tomorrow morning it is bye bye Borneo and 10am flight to Singapore, where I will spend my final two nights of this trip. Will drop the car off at the airport, so thats convenient. More later then!
