Day 2 of our driving tour......
Before leaving Margaret River altogether we decided to head out to watch the surfers in action on the beach - they are mental!
Next stop was Cape Leeuwin lighthouse famous on 2 counts:
1. It's where the Southern and Indian oceans meet
2. It's mainland Australia's tallest lighthouse with 176 steps to the top
Before the introduction of technology the lighthouse was manned by 3 people who worked 4-5 hour shifts. There are 2 recorded ghosts at the lighthouse and lighthouse cottages - a male who wanders around the lighthouse smoking a pipe which you can apparently smell and Elizabeth who likes to turn electrical appliances on and off in one of the cottages. Elizabeth unfortunately fell off a chair whilst hanging curtains and suffered a miscarriage as a consequence. The doctor was sent for but when he arrived 3 days later she had already died of sceptosemia.
We then drove for 3 hours through the Kari forests and not once did the landscape change!! The trees are very tall and when you first start driving though them it is quite an amazing view but after 3 hours you have had more than enough and are desperate for some natural light and a different view.
Walpole our stop for the night is a one street town. We stayed at Walpole Lodge whch is managed by a fabulous older lady called Lynette and her dog called Anne-Elise. Lynette travels around Oz in her camper van and got this job whilst actually staying at the hostel but she will be back on the road soon.
