Well I've had quite an eventful time in Byron Bay - it's a small town that is very popular with both Australian holidaymakers and backpackers. The atmosphere at the hostel is really relaxed but also conducive to having lots of fun and the first night saw us all descend on Cheeky Monkeys for a night of revelrey. This perhaps wasn't the wisest move as we were all booked onto the Nimbin tour the following day, so there were a few sore heads the next morning!
Nimbin - well what can I say about this place!!!! In 1973 4,000 students descended here to hold a festival, their equivalent to Woodstock, the Aquarius Festival. After the festival some liked it so much they didn't bother going home but stayed setting up communes and becoming completely obsessed with cannabis. This is the most prominent thing about Nimbin, cannabis, and despite being illegal in Australia, locally grown cannabis is bought, sold and consumed quite freely on the streets. In fact so obsessed are they that they hold a rally evey year for an end to the prohibition of it - I just wanted to shout 'It's never going to happen so just move on!' but I thought the better of it as I was surrounded by dreadlocked 50+ year olds wearing hand knitted jumpers who I assumed wouldn't be that receptive to my suggestion.
We came home from our Nimbin excursion to find a Sangria party in full swing back at the hostel so yet another good night was had by all! I know what you are thinking from one drug to another, but at least this one is legal and you know what you are getting.
