We have spent the last several days traveling down the Peruvian coastline. We crossed the border by bus, and left Ecuador only to enter Peru at the next desk in same the room. We relaxed for a couple of nights in Mancora, a small ocean town - really a surfer’s paradise. One street of restaurants and vendors with beach as far as the eye can see...a definite change in pace with more great food. We left the tree house Airbnb and headed to Chiclayo, a busy city on the trading route - lots of cars, shops, street carts and vendors. The city never really stops unless there is a soccer game - Peru vs Argentina for the World Cup selections - which brings stories of its own. The highlight of this city was our tour learning about Sipan - a Moche leader. Sipan is connected to Huanchaco through the Moche civilization. The area’s history reads like an Indiana Jones story - lonely planet gets the credit for that analogy...with treasures found in tombs, human sacrifices to ancient gods and even tomb raiders! Huanchaco is just outside of Trujillo - another surfer town morphed from a fishing village. We stayed with a lovely Peruvian family in a great Airbnb - granola/yogurt & fruit for breakfast...a welcomed comfort of home! Daily walks along the boardwalk, more great food and something we didn’t expect to encounter on our trip - roasting marshmallows! A great surprise after an awesome dinner along the beach at the light house. Huanchaco has definite retirement potential!
