We had great fun when we arrived at Auckland airport! Not only did we have to queue for nearly 2 hours at passport control we then went through customs, and because we had walking boots with us we had to get them out! Now this may not seem like anything too difficult but when they've been lost in the bottom of your backpack for nearly a month its a pain having to unpack in the middle of the airport (though they did clean them for us so I guess we can't complain too much!!). We eventually made into Auckland city centre first going to the wrong YHA hostel but a quick trip down a very steep hill brought us to the correct one where we checked in. As we still had some of the day left we had a wander around the city to get our bearings before grabbing a couple of pizzas and heading back to the hostel.
Our first (and only real full day in Auckland) started at the Sky Tower. We had a look around but decided not to go up as the weather wasn't too great and so views of the city wouldn't be good (it was also more expensive than we thought!!). Next, we went to the harbour area and by this time the sun was shining and the views were great, and so we decided to head over to the little seaside town of Devonport. We caught the ferry over there, had a look around at the two volcanoes in the town and had an icecream on the front. Back over in Auckland we got dinner from a food court and went to the cinema to see Jumper!
Our last day (for now!) in Auckland was spent chilling is Starbucks watching the world go by untill we caught a bus to Rotorua, a town 4 hours south of Auckland, and the culture capital of New Zealand!
