Deb's Adventures
Sometime during the night the rain started and it has been relentless. The wind comes and goes and we were wondering if the road to Nandi would be passable to get back to the airport. Road is a very generous word for what is considered drivable around here. It is mostly gravel, potholes and eroded edges with a little bit of pavement here and there. It takes about 3 hours to drive 125 Kilometers. There are also cows, goats, dogs and people everywhere. Every time you pass people you must smile, wave and yell "bula." It very slow going even in the best of conditions. We called the airline and our flight to Sydney is still on time but with Air Pacific you never know. No one will talk about the impending cyclone so I guess we are going to be ok. Lesley, Eric and Ryan went for a snorkel after breakfast. My stomach was a touch upset so I opted not to go. It poured while they were out there but I guess that does not matter when you are swimming. They came back and said it was absolutely amazing. I am sorry I missed it.
We showered, packed and off we went to brave the road. The rain actually let up and it was not too bad. We made it in just over three hours. Thank goodness we had three hours. Apparently we needed an Australian Visa Waiver Form that no one ever mentioned. I asked the airline and checked online in advance and found no mention of this. This is basically a money generator for Australia. We went online, filled out a form, paid our $20ASD each and got back in line to try again. It worked and we were off to Sydney. Air Pacific left only 45 minutes late, which I am learning is pretty much on time in their opinion.
Lesley's friend Ray picked us up at the airport. We crammed all our luggage and five people into his car and drove through Sydney to Manly. We did not leave the airport until about 11:30pm so it was dark and hard to see. Ray did take a detour over the Harbor Bridge and passed the Opera House for us. We arrived at Lesley’s friend’s Holiday house on the water near the ferry dock. Rob and Anne welcomed us with open arms. We visited for as long as we could and then off to bed. We have a big day exploring Sydney tomorrow.
Vinaka and Moce Fiji – Thank you and Goodbye Fiji. You were a great layover on our way to Oz!
