After our late night walk yesterday, we slept in and got up at 10 am. We ate breakfast in our room-had the blueberry scones from Carcross, pineapple juice, plums and coffee/tea. The scones were humongous-more like a blueberry crumb cake so we split one and saved the raspberry for tomorrow. We bought the plums and pineapple juice on our walk last night along with a case of Cokes-Gary had gone 5 days without a Coke and was having addiction pains! The cost of food is high-for example, a hamburger and fries runs 14.00 plus your drink-3.00 more. So we are having breakfast in room, and eating snacks for lunch and a nice dinner in evening. Most entrees are $25-35.00.
We were thinking about renting bikes but started off on foot to look at shops on Main St -1 block from hotel-explored shops and went to historical buildings like an old log church and the visitors center. There is a 3.5 mile loop that goes along the Yukon River, crosses to other side and comes back at downtown. We decide to do the loop and go another mile to the dam to see the salmon fish ladder (longest fish ladder in world!!) that gets the fish through the dam area. Off we go -it is a beautiful walk along the river. When we get to the outskirts of town, we see the Welcome to Whitehorse sign and stop for picture. As luck has it, a local is there and tells us about an eagle's nest nearby. The nest is huge and there is a young eagle in it! We know it is young as it's head is not white yet-yes we paid attention at the bird show on Grouse Mt.! Several pictures later, we resume our hike, cross the river and head to the dam. It is well worth the extra mile as the fish ladder has a wonderful presention thru posters on the life cycle of the salmon and how it gets diverted into the fish ladder by weirs-short waterfall that the fish can't jump over. The salmon swim 1875 miles from the Bering Sea, up the Yukon to their spawning area, and lay their eggs. It is an amazing journey! Inside the observation room you can see the fish area through a window and see the fish going through the ladder. The salmon won't be here for 2 more weeks, but there are yearling and other fish. Of course, engineer Gary wants to walk up and over to the other side of the dam to see where the fish come out and observe the dam in action-another 1/2 mile up and back but-hey we need exercise.
We then head back, now on the other side of the river and see a small area we can wade in. We both want to see how cold it is, so off with the shoes and in we step-Brrrr-freezing! We don't stay long and look for smooth river rocks-find several beauties-we end up at the paddlewheeler-The Klondike- which is now an exhibit. We continue to a nice city park with a totem pole and great slides and swings-boy, McKinley,Landon and Jackson would have fun here-also a water park area that kids are running through and a skateboard/bike park where teens are jumping and twirling. It's now close to 6 and we are starving. I am wearing a Texas Tech t-shirt and a young couple comes up to us as we are waiting outside the restaurant. They had gone to Tech and are now in route to Fairbanks where the husband will be stationed-small world! We had a halibut, artichoke, spinach dip with bread, and split a rib and salmon dinner with roasted veggies, garlic mashed potatoes and bread. My sister, Mary would have loved the dip and by the way - Happy Birthday one day early to Mary!! You are the best and I Love You-have a great day on the 24th!
We return to the hotel and visit with 2 other tour couples-one from New York and the other from Nebraska. The Nebraska lady had retired after 35 years in elementary school and it seems like the education system has the same problems everywhere-no discipline and too much paperwork! Another great day in the Yukon!!
