Have enjoyed walking around the art nouveau district of Riga with beautiful architecture, prevalent in the early 20th century. Also went up the tower of St Peters Cathedral for magnificent views over the city of Riga, showing the contrast in medieval, art nouveau style buildings, alongside the very plain, dark buildings that were dominant during the Soviet occupation of Latvia.
Latvia has a sad history of repression during periods of Soviet and German occupation in the first half of the 20th century and have only developed independence again in recent years after long political struggles.
Eating out is relatively inexpensive, by Australian standards, with favourite foods including vegetable soups, meatloaf, pork dishes, boiled potatoes, cabbage dishes. Have been having cold meat, cheese and salad with bread for breakfast! Alongside, long days of sunlight (not dark until 11 pm and light again at 4 am) my body clock is not really sure what time of day it is!
