I left Noosa last week to head towards the snow. I managed to get myself a Job working in a Restaurant in the resort of Thredbo. I had spent the last few weeks collecting warmer clothes and things to wear in the snow. After over a year of living in shorts and singlets I was not prepared for the cold weather. A couple of jumpers, coats a hat and gloves and I thought I was ready (how wrong was i??).
My last morning in Noosa was madness, Chelsea and I went on our last run together and I saw a group of kangaroos. I was so excited to see kangaroos on my last day. I then went into school as I promised Chelsea and Gabby that I would meet their friends, dropped the twins off at nursery then was dropped of at the bus stop. Finally quiet and alone it started to sink in that I was leaving again for something new. I know travellers have different feelings about moving on, me? I always get a bit sad. I meet so many people and have a brilliant time and then move somewhere new all alone again and have to start the whole cycle again. It is not until I have my first breathtaking moment at the new destination that I realise it was a good idea.
First stop was Brisbane, I met up with Rachel who I had met on Fraser island a few weeks before and we ventured out into Brisbane, first was some shopping of course. That evening was ladies night in the bar at Bunk where we were staying. So we headed down to receive our free drink…Note to self - free drinks never taste very nice and rarely have any alcohol in them. But it was a good start to the night anyway. We had a good gossip, met some interesting people in the bar and had a relatively early night. The next day we wanted to go walking but it was raining as that is all it seems to do in Brisbane at this time of year. So we went to the Brisbane museum, had a few beers in southbank and watched The great Gatsby at the cinema before going back to the hostel so that I could rearrange my bag and pack again.
The next day was flying day…Rachel came with me to the train station to say goodbye, as I sat on the platform and thought would send a quick text, I couldn't find my phone. I panicked ran towards the train conductor and asked him to look after my big bag while I ran to the hostel to get my phone. That I did, I ran the whole way to get my phone which had disappeared into my doona at the hostel. I made the train as it pulled onto the platform. I spent the next 30 minutes of the journey trying to recover and not look like a sweaty mess in my jumper, jeans and boots (As I was flying I had all my warmest clothes on). The flight and arrival into Canberra went without a hitch. I was met at the airport by Georgie and she took me to thredbo. I met my new housemate dropped my bags and headed straight to the restaurant to get to know the place and some of the staff.
The weekend passed in a blur of work, Sunday evening was drinking time. With two days off to follow I was in need of a beer. Monday morning I went into Jindabyne which is the closest town to Thredbo at about 35km away. It is the best place to buy food and clothes as it is cheaper but with no public transport running between the town I am left getting lifts from friends. Emma gave me a lift into town so that I could go shopping and we went to a few coffee shops on the way too. All in all a very nice day off.
Thredbo is a strange place at the moment, there are not many people around with opening weekend being this weekend. There is no snow and therefore they are not sure that the slopes will open at the weekend or not. I am yet to have my breathtaking moment here, at the moment it is cold with no snow and it rains a lot. I am hoping all this will change, I am hoping that this weekend will be how I expected the snow season to run.
