Although it feels like only six days, we've now been travelling for six weeks , so time for another update!
Katie and I had a few days in Siem Reap before Rob and Lou arrived to meet us, and managed to squeeze a fair amount in before they arrived.
We started by heading to a local NGO orphanage called Acodo in the evening to see a show that they put on for locals. We were greeted by about 40 children at the gate asking us our names and where we were from, who guided us in to the orphanage. We were then showed around the bedroom, classroom and Kitchen (one pot of rice over a fire). After seeing it we were ready to give them all the money we had in our wallets, but had to hold back when we remembered we were cheapo travellers.
They did a dance show for the audience (Me, Katie and an Australian woman), which was really cute and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. After they finished they all came over to us giving us hugs and telling us they loved us etc. The pessimistic side of me made me think they are told to do this to squeeze as much out of tourists as possible, but they seemed genuinely happy to see us and perform their show for us so i'm putting my pessimism to one side. I put $10 in their collection which made me feel like a skinflint but they were so happy it was unbelievable. The Cambodian man who ran the orphanage came over and gave me a long hug as we left so I don't think he was too upset by the donation. We both wanted to volunteer at the orphanage but couldn't stay in Siem Reap for long enough so we may volunteer in a different orphanage when we get to Phnom Penh.
The next day we headed over to Ankor Wat, a place which our tour guide Mr Ra told us was one of the seven wonders of the world (not an official tour guide!). The place was amazing and our tour guide waxed lyrical for two hours on the one temple alone. Bearing in mind there are about fifty temples in total we decided to do the rest on our own to save a bit of time.
During the middle of the day the heavens opened and we had to seek shelter in the back of the tuk tuk that we rented for the day. Our tuk tuk seemed to be the only one without a waterproof cover so we got soaked. The rain was so heavy the driver climbed in the back with us to sit it out for a bit. As he spoke no English we passed the half hour stuck in the back of the tuk tuk by pointing at things, nodding and smiling. It was great!
The place is incredible and Katie's new camera was stuck to her face the entire day so take a look at the photos rather than me keep going on about it!
We met Lou and Rob last Saturday and went out for a BBQ (had alligator and snake... nice) and had a fair few beers... in Siem Reap Beer cost 35p and we found a place today where it costs 18p.. need I say more!
We spent about five days in Siem Reap and then got a boat to Battambang. The boat journey was amazing, travelling through the flooded fields seeing only the tops of some trees. On a fair few occasions the boat got stuck in a tree or nearly hit another boat, but the locals are pretty relaxed and didn't seem to care!
The boat journey there was the best part about Battambang, so you might have guessed the place wasn't all that. We stayed for a couple of nights and then headed down to Sihanoukville where we are now.
The place has lovely beaches and a good nightlife so we're pretty much set here!
We went to a local casino last night as anyone who gambles there gets free food and beer all night! Good in theory but when you are as bad at Blackjack as me it is probably best to steer clear!
We all went on a snorkelling trip today to Bamboo island which was really fun, and are heading off to a bar in a bit to watch the Spurs game and a having a bit of a seafood BBQ.
Hope everyone back home is well!
