Hidi hi Campers,
Us again. Dean and I are currently sat in an internet cafe listening to 5 vietnamese kids playing 'world of war craft'.... loud geeks!
I thought I'd let all those who haven't given up on reading our blog an update on the last few weeks. Cambodia was amazing and we managed to see a lot of the country whilst traveling from place to place.
Before we left Sihanoukville Dean and I went on a fancy boat trip around the islands. Definitely a step up from the norm, this boat had a sun deck, bar and a toilet!
It was also a bargain as I got my ticket for 5 bucks instead of 30....they said something about giving discounts to incourage western men to bring their asian 'girlfriends' on the boat?! I didn't have the heart to say anything different so I just smiled and nodded.
The boat took us to nice snorkelling sites and had an amazing lunch on board before trekking through the mangroves on one of the islands -it was effectively a swamp. Marching through the mangroves in waste deep water wasn't my high point of the day but we did get some cool pictures and Dean thought he was in Apocalypse Now. It was only as we were heading back to the boat that our guide explained he 'discovered' the trek a week ago and thought it would be nice for his paying customers to experience.
After Sihnoukville we travelled up to Phnom Pehn, the water festival was on so the city was rammed with visitors,we did however get exclusive river side seats to watch the boat race, as the tourism board had an enclosure that foreigners were allowed in .As well as exploring the city we did the neccessary museum visits to S21 and the killing fields. A pretty harrowing day which showed evidence of the very worst human behaviour.
As we had a few days to kill before heading to Vietnam we decided to head north to Kratie. They must have heard we were coming because the place was dead, we stayed for a day which we hired bikes and cycled 16km to a dolphin spotting site on the Mekong.
We peddled our way through tiny villages in which all the children would run along side us screaming 'hello' 'hello' 'what is your name?' The Cambodian kids are the cutest, i've even had thoughts of kidnapping one!
Dolphin spotting was well worth the 7 hour bus trip and 1 hour bike ride. Although they didn't come close to the boat, every now and then we saw them breach the surface for air before diving back to the river bed. Very cool to watch but near on impossible to take photos of!
Due to the lack of life in Kratie we headed back to Phnom Penh the next day where we bumped into a friend from home who was on a two week holiday...it really is a small world!
Anywho, we arrived in Saigon yesterday after a two day trip down the Mekong River from Phnom Penh. Nothing much to report there apart from seeing a fish farm!! and going to a place they make scarfs! whoop whoop! They did however dress Dean and I up like the locals. Check out the pix coz we look ridiculous!
Saigon is crazy hectic and everytime you cross the road you are literally risking your life. We've explored a bit and went to the war museum today where we learnt about the b****** Americans.
We've had enough of cities so are off to Mue Ney tomorrow to enjoy the beach, we feel we haven't had enough lazing around by the sea recently so need a break.
We'll be in touch soon, thanks for all our messages, they make us feel a little closer to home.
Lots of Love
Katie and Dean
P.S For all those looking for a beard update Dean has taken to triming it with a pair of nail scissors as it was getting pretty unruley.
