A short bus trip from Hue to Hoi An and I arrive in this lovely port town. Reminds me of Luang Prabang but busier and lacking some of the calmness of the Laos town. The bus was an 'open tour' bus which consisted of three rows of bunk pods across the bus, if you are longer than 5ft 9 then you are stuck in a kind of bent position, so lucky for me at 5ft 6.5 I fitted in just right, although after an hour my bum was numb and i was left feeling grateful that it was a 3.5 hour journey and not any longer, it certainly made my mind up for the rest of my travels in Vietnam, any type of transport but this bus! I've taken to two wheels here, went on a cycle tour and motorcycle tour and met some nice people,a Brit couple who got engaged at Haylong Bay last week, very romantic, our cycle tour guide who introduced us to her boyfriend who owns a bar where we had a good evening playing pool and chatting, i even won some games. The motorbike tour was up into the countryside to see some Cham remains at a place called 'my son', this was the centre of the Kingdon of Champa and was the centre of things from the 4th century till the 13th, needless to say the US bombed it to bits during the war so very little remains now, but still enough to get a view of what was here. A very good day with good company, a Dutch and Aussie couple, all very good fun. The rest of my time in Hoi An was spend chilling on the beach, very quiet and nice and an early morning photo tour and workshop to a fishing village, 5am pick up to see the daily catch coming in and being purchased and organised by loads and loads of women in conical hats and big baskets balanced on motorcycles, all very hectic and frantic, I relearnt some basics for the camera and also how to get the locals to agree to us taking their photo which was easier said than done!, watch out for some more photos to come. I ended up staying longer than planned and really liked it here, on my last night I went to a nice restaurant called 'morning glory' which is the name for the local water spinach which seems to be served with every dish here, a very nice meal steamed rice crepes with shrimp, pork, mushrooms and bean sprouts and sea bass with red rice risotto and yes, morning glory, very nice, I would say yummy, but apparently that means horny in Vietnamese so I have stopped saying that in front of the locals as they get very embarrassed! So after six days it is now time to move on and after some good advice from the Dutch couple I am flying to Dalat up in the hills where it should be a bit cooler, I am looking forward to seeing some of the less touristy Vietnam.
