A really quick flight from Singapore with Air Asia and a quick visit of three days in Kuala Lumpur to finish my time in SE Asia. This is a proper city with all the chaos on the roads and the dynamic mix of cultures and new and old buildings. The centre looked like a big building site where they are building extensions to the subway and new buildings are going up. The Petronas Twin towers are the highlight, once the tallest building in the world they stand erect over the city and are a very impressive sight, especially at night when the way they are lit brings them alive. There are loads of shopping malls and rather than an underground conduits between buildings they have a mix of elevated and submerged walkways to get around, all air conditioned which is essential because it is so so hot here. I took a heritage walking tour with a really friendly bunch of Brits and one German girl, we walked around the original city and ate and visited some of the local food stalls. We tried many types of food, including the Durian fruit, now this is a fruit that smells of vomit, all through my journey the locals claimed that it was only us tourists who could smell it as they could not, let me tell you it does smell of sick and after tasting it as well, it tastes like it as well! We all agreed apart from Frank, an older chap on the tour who liked it a lot! We visited and observed a religious service at a Hindu temple and met some very friendly local store holders who are holding on to their traditional local services in the face of modernisation and progress. Really good tour that continued into the night with drinks and finished with me, Fred and Anita finishing a few jugs of beer into the early hours in a reggae bar where a few Local Indian gentlemen danced trance like to the reggae music, all very weird! It's always great to hear other people's journeys and stories, a really good day and evening and a great way to spend my last day in Asia. I know that Malasia has so much more to offer than just KL however discovery of this country will have to wait for another time, I feel certain I will be back. After a bit of shopping to get some warmer cloths ready for the cooler temperatures in Australia I was ready to move on. I have really enjoyed my time in SE Asia and whilst I liked Singapore and Kuala Lumpur the real highlights for me were on my longer travels through Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia where I feel I got to know some of the country and some of the people well. I have so many fantastic memories I will hold tight for ever. Now on to Australia.
