So during our time in Melbourne we hired a car a took a drive the Great Ocean Road. We drove through towards a place called Geelong and then headed south to Torquay, the start of the road! Only took about 90 mins to get to the start, so its definately worth doing if you're in Melbourne!
The weather was good today and our first stop was Bells Beach, the home of Rip Curl and Quicksilver. It is also the home of one of the biggest world surfing competitions which happens in March/April. We didnt think much of the beach, I thought it was going to be bigger, but it was pretty cool. Although we had sunshine for most of the day it was really windy day, especially walking around the coastline!
We continued to drive west and hugged the coastline all the way through the towns of Anglesea, Fairview and Lorne. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. With having our own car we were able to stop whenever we wanted to take photos and admire the beautiful views. We had lunch in a cute tearoom in Lorne, a very pretty little town and then headed further west passing through Apollo Bay. The ocean is so blue and there are some fantastic family beaches along this stretch of the coast. We passed many caravan and camping sights, definately a fantasitc holiday destination wiith all the family. We also went through a kuala area and saw some cars stopped and people looking up into the trees!!! We stopped and we got to see our first wild kualas! aawwwww i was so happy and one of them was only 10m high up so we took some brilliant pics of the little fella, they are so cute!!!!!1
After passing Apollo Bay, the road heads inland for about 50-60 miles through Ottaway National Park, so at this point you dont see the coast. At one point I thought we'd gone the wrong way because our compass was telling us we were going north for a good while (we didnt have a map) but the road eventually headed back south and after an hour or so we were closer to the twelve apostles!
Our next stop...The Twelve Apostles, the most photographed stretch of road on the GOR. We arrived after 3.30pm so the sun was starting to fall over them...but it was still amazing to see them. We got some great photos, you cant see them all from the vantage point but it was great to admire these big rock formations that were once part of the land thousands of years ago.
We then carried on a few miles to Loch Ard Gorge (named after a British shipwreck so close to arriving into Melbourne in 1878) The gorge is beautiful and had such a lovely beach. Its very difficult to describe, so you'll just have to enjoy the photos....we were really enjoying seeing these amazing rock formations. Some were arches/holes and the ocean flows through them, its fascinating. The wind was high so you can imagine some of the waves we saw, it was brilliant.
This area of the Great Ocean Road is known as the Basse Straight aka ' shipwrecked coast' as it claimed many British vessels during the time when the British were sailing to Australia few new life. There is so much history around these shores its frightening to imagine ships getting caught up in the strong currents and shallow reefs....but being here you can see it was possible. The sea was trecherous when we were there.
We went to the 'Blow Out' a big hole made by the ocean bashing on the sandstone and then we decided to go check into our hostel in Port Campbell, a cute village which is close to all the great sights on this stretch of the road. There is just a line of shops and a small cove beach, really cool place and it has a population of 200 people!
After dinner we went to check out the sunset at London Bridge which again was further west again. We stopped at the Bay of Islands and Bay of Martyrs, all amazing little rock bulges just hovering in the ocean.....great photos! Our last stop being London Bridge, we watched the sun set over the clouds...it was freezing cold, the wind was blowing a gale and sometimes I thought we were goiing to take off, it was so strong!!!!
London Bridge was wicked...a huge sandstone shape just off the coast with a massive arch throough the middle. In 1990 it was still joined to the mainland and a part of it fell and crashed into the waters below....luckily no one was hurt but there were two people stranded on the outer part and they were rescued by helicopter! Its crazy to think that the errosion is happening all the time and we hardly notice.
We were just about to leave when we noticed loads of people huddled up over looking the beach by Londons Bridge. We asked them what they were doing and they said they were waiting for the little penguins!!!!! We stayed and finally after dusk (it was practically dark) we saw these little dots down on the beach, haha we freezed ourselves waiting for this moment and we couldnt really tell if they were penguins! They were but it was too dark and we were high up on the cliff! But it was a little adventure to finish off our day!
What a fantastic day! Plus its been great to get behind the wheel again!
The next day we headed back to the twelve apostles to get some photos with different sunlight. They were awesome!!!! On the way we saw our first wild kangaroo jump across the road! Thank god he was about 30m ahead of us!!! We then slowly made our way back along the coastal line stopping for photos and a few breaks. We made picnic and ate it in Airlies Inlet after having a look around Split Point Lighthouse built vin 1891, the last one built too help navigation along the shipwreck coast!!!
We then stopped in Torqauy at the beginning of the road where there is a section of the main road with every surf shop possible! Big shops aswel!!! We would of been shopping more if it wasnt for me hitting my big toe on a curb and slicing a chunk of my skin off, it was disgusting and im not exagerrating! I got cleaned up in the local medical centre (mum we would of used your supplies but i was bleeding lots and sand was blowing everywhere so we didnt want to get the hire car dirty! haha, was funny mind!!!! It was gross!!!
We got back to Melbourne before 6pm to drop the car off and then had an early night as we'd driven 450miles over the two days! It was a small hyundai petrol car and guess how much gas we put in for 450 miles.....under 20quids worth! Crazy cheap eh? Shame groceries and eating and drinking out isnt as cheap!!!!!
We had a great little trip, check out the pics, some of them are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
