So after leaving Port Douglas and hanging around in Cairns for a few hours, we eventually arrived in Mission Beach in the afternoon on Monday 2nd Feb!
Weather pretty cloudy...its warm/humid but you can tell its the wet season at the moment!!! The Greyhound wasnt going much further that Innisfall due to the flood waters blocking the highway. People travelling along the Bruce Highway are literally stuck....you cant travel through to Townsville because of the floods! We didnt realise it was so bad!
So we arrived at Scotty's (a good hostel recommendation from Sophie B!) and really liked it! Its right on the beach and has a great pool and outside area! It was just such a shame the weather wasnt all that great. Mission Beach town is tiny! We didnt even see a town! So quiet too, especially at this time of year!!!
We headed to the beach for a quick look (before it started to pour down!) and its a big long beach....still cant go in the sea! We had a little stroll but had to run back to the hostel when the heavens opened!
The hostel wasnt very busy (we were in a 12 bed dorm and ony 5 beds taken) so Monday eve was Mint Night...a little cafe turns into a nightclub and for $9 we had a scrumptious dinner and a had a little bit of a boogie with fellow backpackers!!!!
We didnt get to do much in Mission Beach. Its a popular place to do a skydive so the following day a few people killed a few hours by doing that. But they didnt get to land on the beach because the wind was up. We're planning on doing it in NZ!!!
It pretty much rained the rest of the time we were there and the floods down south got worse. Greyhound buses ceased their services so we were stuck in Mission Beach! Couldnt go north or south.........GREAT!!!!
So many travellers were trying to find a way out of Mission Beach.... in the rain there was literally nothing to do!! One highlight of our 2 days there was visiting Woolworths (big supermarket!) Haha, thats how boring it got!!!
We eventually managed to leave on the Wednesday, but we had to pay for a bus that was in Tully (10km south) which was taking White Water Rafters back to Cairns. That was the only transport possible to Cairns so about 8 of us from the hostel decided to do it! Scottys were great in sorting it out for us, we felt sorry for them that everyone was wanting to leave and nobody was coming through because the roads were flooding! Nightmare!
So we made it back to Cairns....again! We were hoping to travel in the other direction but it looks like the floods have become one of Australia's biggest natural disasters with some townships cut off from civiisation for upto 10 days. We met one couple who hired a car and had a flight out of Brisbane 4 days later....they definately wouldnt of made it to Brisbane by road so we hope they got there somehow!!!
We decided to fly.....we couldnt do the Barrier Reef from Mission Beach because of the weather so we decided we had to do it from the place we started the East coast from...Cairns! So now our plans had been turned upside down. We had a day on the reef and then a flight booked for the Goldcoast.
Cairns Part 2 is another blog you'll have to wait for!!!!
