Hello again -for the last time on these particular travels,
We made it into San Francisco virtually one hour before we left Cairns! Work that one out! Small wonder our heads were well and truly puddled for some time after we arrived. Nontheless we settled into a hotel which was recommended by close friends (Frances & John) and felt a certain degree of reservation. Not your normal sort of hotel; no ensuite, small rooms, no tea making facilities, tight corridors and so on. Not what we'd expect from our Frances! However, as our heads cleared and we began to recognise each other again the romantic, charming, quaintness of the place began to infect us. Yes, the San Remo Hotel on North Beach, San Francisco is a superb place, a superb location and all that you want America to be. The photos will explain the uniqueness of this place and it all helped to settle us and renew our spirits for a determined exploration of this magnificent city.
So, in the space of three plus days we have
(1) Explored Alcatraz, (2) spent much time in and around Pier 39, enjoying sumptuous seafood and being entertained by barking sealions, (3) used public transport extensively (including cablecar, streetcar and bus) to visit such places as Golden Gate National Park, Cliff House, Seal Rocks and Ocean Beach, (4) Joined a tour to explore the redwood forests at Muir Woods and the Californian Cote D'Azure at Sausalito, (5) enjoyed exploring and tasting the delights of China Town, (6) followed ecology and ridge trails in the Presidio, photograped the Golden Gate Bridge from below (Chrissy Fields) and walked miles of streets throughout SF. The one thing that has been a shock to our body and senses is the San Franciscan weather! Trust a Brit to complain about the weather but truth is, most San Franciscans also do. After leaving the heat of the tropics the biting cold wind and heavy sea fog cuts you to the bone! However, within minutes the wind can drop, the fog lift and you are basking in bright unbroken sunshine. God knows what this will do to our bodies?
There has not been a minute to spare over the last three days and yet we needed a final fitting end to this brilliant three month journey. Last night was it! An early Italian dinner in the heart of the Latin Quarter followed by a short bus ride to the famed Curran Theatre off Union Square. A classic performance called "Jersey Boys" which details the life of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (OK, most of you haven't a clue but real music buffs of the 60's will be purring!); the music was sensational (bought the CD soundtrack of the show -yes, will lend!) and the night was a perfect way to say goodbye to the beautiful city of SF.
Today (Weds 30th) is travel day. Should be home by tomorrow evening and the grim reality of life! Depression here we come!!!
