Our Year of Adventure
As if every day is not really a lazy day for us, we decided to have a proper lazy day - it was Sunday after all. The curtains in the room are really thick and no matter how bright the sun is outside, it's still '2am dark' in the room. That combined with the comfiest bed and pillows ever, it was mid morning before we woke.
We took a walk up Via Argentina in search of the New York Bagel Cafe for brunch. It had good reviews and supposedly frequented by local ex-pats. We nearly walked past it because there was just one small door at the entrance but it was like walking into a warehouse. It was huge, there was a cooking station and order counter in front of us, off to the right it seemed to be an endless amount of tables and chairs which were nearly all occupied.
We had the NYC Breakfast Special - 3 eggs, bacon or chorizo sausage, home fries, a bagel and unlimited coffee. In true American style, it was choice after choice - how do you want the eggs, bacon or sausage, what type of bagel. The coffee choice was just bewildering, there were rows of different types of freshly brewed coffee. Maria opted for some hazelnut flavoured coffee while David went for 'bottom row, third from the left'.
We were so full afterwards, we waddled the long way back to our hotel. We're only a third of the way through our adventure but we need to think about getting home afterwards too. We booked flights to Scotland, Finland and Lapland in December so we'll definitely be in Europe for Christmas. We'll keep our eye out for special deals in January for the trip back to New Zealand.
We had arranged to meet with Marina and Daniel for drinks and dinner, they were staying close by and flying out tomorrow. The closest bar was Bros and Beer, a busy sports bar. We ordered a plate of nachos to keep us going until we ate and go the surprise of our life when a mountain of nachos smothered in meat and cheese was delivered to the table. We should have guessed, being an American style bar that the food would be American portions.. The numerous TV's around the bar were showing the USA-Portugal game. The atmosphere became ecstatic when USA took the lead with only minutes remaining in the game. They should have had an historic win albeit for a Portuguese goal 5 minutes into injury time. The ecstatic mood in the bar disappeared like a burst balloon and the customers flowed out the door - a bit like All Blacks fans leaving a bar after a game, except they leave immediately even when they win.
A little further down the road was a Peruvian restaurant, aptly named Machu Picchu. There was no guinea pig on the menu to David's disappointment but there was a nice steak with a creamy Peruvian pepper sauce. It was served on a bed of spagetti which was most unusual but nonetheless, tasty all the same.
