Our Year of Adventure
We took a walk through the city from our hotel to Iglesia del Carmen and towards the coast and Bahia de Panama. The walk up Via Espana to the church was a busy street with both traffic and pedestrians. The street is lined with shops and there are a few malls set back from the road. Crossing the road in the city is a bit of a challenge, half the times there is no pedestrian light and the zebra crossings are mostly ignored by drivers. After a quick photo of the church, we managed to cross the busy intersection and make our way down towards the sea. The road we went down was relatively quiet but there were office blocks to be seen in every direction. Some of the towers are really modern, especially the 'Revolution Tower'.
The bay was a disappointment, the sea looked very uninviting but you need to bear in mind that it's pretty much sitting on one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
We followed the coastal path, which was actually quite nice, towards the Multicentro Mall. Maria was happy to get a wee fix, looking round the shops - David needed a sugar rush from Cinnabon to get his fix. At one end of the mall, there was a walkway to the Hard Rock Hotel. It had an incredible amount of memorabilia - costumes, original lyrics, instruments and even a car from one of U2's tours.
Walking back to our hotel we missed a turn, probably because we couldn't cross the street, and we ended up at another mall. The Multiplaza Mall was huge and Maria got really excited - the main food court alone was about the size of Auckland's downtown mall (there were actually two and the second was bigger than anything in New Zealand).
David bought a few new shirts to replace some of the ones he brought. Having only half a dozen shirts, they get worn a lot and seem to wear out a bit quicker on the road.
There were so many choices in the food court, you could die of starvation before checking each one out. We plumped for Carl's Jr, they make a decent burger and their advertising is pretty good too. The PC crowd haven't clamped down on Panama's advertising standards yet...
