Our Year of Adventure
The forecasted rain was coming down as snow but with the continued unseasonal 'high' temperature it wasn't replacing what had melted over the last 24 hours.
We were heading back to Venejärvi today to pick up stuff we had left there and start the packing process for our Latin American adventure. There was time however for a burger at Julli's before leaving Ylläs. David couldn't get past the 'Burger with Antlers' on the menu, pretty much a regular cheeseburger but with a layer of reindeer thrown in for good measure. Maria made a more interesting choice of a Salmon burger with prawns served in Rye Bread...it must have been really good because David didn't even get an offer to taste it.
On the drive south, we were surprised how different everything had become in a week or so. Gone were the snow capped trees and the mounds of snow lining the road. Gone were the clouds, the sky was blue and the sun was shining. On the final leg of journey, on the slippy, slushy forest road there was a horrible thought that there might be some hard work ahead at the house. What if the snow on the roofs had melted enough for it to slide off? We would need to dig our way in through the heavy, compressed snow. Our fears were confirmed, every door was blocked by waist deep piles of snow. It didn't seem to take so long to clear the snow though, maybe we were getting used to it. We lit some fires and had dinner of Blood Pudding with Lingon Berries.
After some packing and a sauna in the cabin, we walked back to the main house for a late supper. It was just before midnight, the night sky was clear with thousands of stars twinkling above our heads and as we turned the corner we noticed a green glow behind the trees in distance. Were the Northern Lights about to put on a show for us? We stopped in our tracks and focused on the glow...nothing...and then a streak of light shot up into the sky...and then another...the show was on!! For about 10 minutes we watched the light dance across the sky line and eventually shoot towards the heavens before fading out.
