Our Year of Adventure
David was up early and went in search of coffee whilst Maria slept a bit longer. There were a couple of cafes in the next street that were doing takeaway coffee. Perhaps polystyrene cups are very expensive in Galapagos or maybe the woman just decided to rip off David but his coffee cost $2. A sit-in breakfast including coffee was only $3.
Later in the morning, we ventured out for breakfast and found Galapagos Deli in a side street. It was twice the price of the other cafe, at $6, but this one had proper espresso coffee and freshly baked bread.
After a filling breakfast, and a second coffee because it was so good, we walked to Tortuga Bay. There was a nice path, about 2.5km long, built over the headland on Puerto Ayora town's southern side. It only took about 45min to reach a beautiful white sand beach. This beach, Playa Brava had strong currents and wasn't good for swimming but walking to the end of the beach there was a second beach around the corner, Playa Mansa. Playa Mansa's water was very calm and shallow. We sunbathed for couple of hours and then had a quick swim to rinse the sand off before heading back. The walk back was a lot hotter than the way there, so we stopped for an ice cream.
We took a walk up to the dive shop to collect the photos and video from yesterday. We watched them as they copied onto the memory stick and were pleasantly surprised at how good they were. David is now thinking a GoPro might be a good investment.
David decided to buy a souvenir t-shirt and felt justified to get one with a hammerhead shark on it, now that he had actually seen one for real in the wild.
We met Xavier later, he had been diving today but admitted that his dive today was not really worth it considering what we had seen yesterday.
We all went to the fish market for dinner. A small kitchen sets up next to where the fish is sold and cooks up the freshest fish. For $10 you could get a whole fish with salad, rice and patacones. We decided to get 2 fish, a Brujo and a Blanquillo, between the 3 of us and it was a struggle to finish it all.
