Our Year of Adventure
The 'Green Season' in Costa Rica has pretty predictable weather and it's not just rain, rain, rain. The mornings are generally really sunny and it's late afternoon or evening before it starts to rain and when it does, it's a storm to remember. New Zealand storms always seemed quite spectacular but after witnessing the storms in Costa Rica they seem quite tame. With lightening that turns the entire sky from black to shades of blue, thunder that cracks at deafening decibels and rumbles on until the next flash of lightening, they are definitely storms to be experienced. Even the noise of the rain drowns out a conversation unless voices are raised.
That said, it was a great storm last night and the sun was shining again this morning. After a leisurely and very filling breakfast, we set off for Cascada Uvita. The waterfall was at the far side of Uvita, not so far away, maybe a 3km walk up towards the hills.
We walked down a path that had definitely seen better days to the river's edge and it was immediately obvious the rain from last nights storm was still making it's way down from the mountains. We couldn't actually see the falls but the pools we hoped to soak in were more like whirlpools. Despite a group of local boys jumping and diving into the frothing pool, we weren't convinced enough to get in. We slowly made our way up the edge of the river to the actual falls, a 7m drop into an even more torrid pool. David ventured in first and apart from being cold, the force of water kept pushing him back into the rocks. There was no chance of swimming here, only getting wet for a photo.
The local boys had followed us up river and were obviously keen to impress us. With their efforts to swim across the pool thwarted by the current, they dragged themselves across with help of a fallen bamboo tree. Once across to the far side of the river, they proceeded to show off their diving and jumping skills from the side and the top of the waterfall.
It was a lot easier to use the pool back at our hotel to keep cool in the afternoon heat, so that is what we did. A bit of swimming, a bit of reading, just being lazy but enjoying it.
We walked back into the main part of Uvita to buy bus tickets for our trip tomorrow. We decided we will go to Panama, to the city of 'David', in fact - David is still wondering what 'David in David' will be like and could it be special.
We nearly felt embaressed about our laziness, we just went to the hotel's restaurant La Fogata again, even though it hadn't even started raining yet today. We hadn't tried the spit roasted chicken yet, so the laziness was justified. The chicken was good and there was a lot of of it...chickens must be super sized in Costa Rica.
