Our Year of Adventure
We were at the bus stop early and queueing up with the school kids. The school was on the way to Monteverde Reserve. It is another Cloud Forest, like Santa Elena, but a lot cloudier and wetter, at least today.
We took the advice of the ranger and walked a combination of trails for couple of hours despite the rain. A short way into the park, there was a 100m long suspension bridge that was 25m above ground giving a great view of the canopy. A couple of Quetzals, very colourful birds with long tail feathers, were flying around.
We were hoping to see monkeys and sloths but perhaps the extreme cloud and rain was making them take shelter somewhere. Even at the view point, there was only cloud today. There were plenty of insects and butterflies, and at one point there was a snake pointed out to us but it was very hard to see it about 20m up in the top of a leafy tree.
Next door to the Reserve, there is an art gallery which puts out sugar water in feeders for hummingbirds. It was amazing to be so close to these birds as they zoomed in at high speed to hover at a feeding station before darting off again. Some of the feeders had rests that allowed them to stop and just look around. There was a huge variety of hummingbirds too, of different colours and sizes.
We walked back down the hill through Monteverde village to Santa Elena. It was only about 5km and had nice views of the mountains and down towards the Nicoya Peninsula on the coast.
