Our Year of Adventure
We were leaving Drop Bear Hostel today but were still struggling to work out where to go next. We'd been looking at going to Medellin either by plane or bus but were struggling trying to book anything. We decided we would move round to Taganga, a small fishing village literally just round the headland. It was supposed to be nice and would give us an extra day to work out getting to Medellin.
We booked a place online but within the time it took David to go to the ATM and back, they canceled on us. We managed to book another place, Hotel Casa D'Mer, which was close to the beach and before they would cancel, we jumped into a taxi to take us there.
The taxi took us out of Santa Marta in north and climbed up into the headland, as we emerged on the other side, the view into the bay way was stunning. Taganga itself is not so flash, it's a poor fishing village that hasn't caught up with it's potential. The streets are unpaved and the locals have no running water. We managed to get a very good tour of all nine streets in the village because, as usual, the taxi driver had no clue where our hotel was.
The Hotel Casa D'Mer was very nice though with it's roof terrace, sea breeze and tiny but very deep dipping pool. It was just back from the sea front but far enough not to hear any of the shore front hustle and bustle. It seems that we are competing with Colombians on their annual vacations and that explains why prices are so high and accommodation scarce.
We took a walk up the beach and it was packed, even though the beach wasn't that fantastic. We took a couple of photos and went to find something to eat. Bitácora was recommended by our hotel and as it was showing the football, it seemed a perfect choice. We both had grilled fish and it was fantastic.
After dinner we went back to try to book a flight to Medellin but prices had gone up significantly. It also seems that Avianca doesn't allow booking from local site with a foreign card, you need to use the international site and the price is about 3 times more than the local price. Looks like we will be taking the bus...
