Our Year of Adventure
Maria had bit of cold and was feeling a bit under the weather so it was a good excuse to have a lazy day. There was a panaderia (like a bakery cafe) a block away from the hostel so we wandered down there for some breakfast. As we ate our croissants, we watched TV and the homecoming of the Colombian Football Team from the World Cup in Brazil.
A bomb had went off in downtown Medellin last night which had killed at least one person and injured many more but it was not reported in local news, only foreign news. Today, Colombia was only interested in the Football Team. The live television broadcast from Bogota was attended by tens of thousands of people and watched no doubt by the entire nation. This incredible homecoming celebration was for a team who had not actually won but did get to the Quarter Final stage for the first time ever.
The afternoon was spent organising forward travel and updating the blog, once again it was quite a few days behind. It's a bit of a double edge sword - the more packed and fun filled days we have, the longer it takes to write about them.
We had booked up for the hostal's Sunday BBQ, we had read some very good reports about it and it meant we didn't have to go out looking for food. Kelvin, the owner, fired up a huge charcoal barbecue about 4pm and started the slow cooking of big chicken pieces shortly after. The chicken was joined by chorizos, pork, steak, peppers and onions giving off a fantastic aroma. By 6pm everything was ready and a big queue formed, it didn't take long to serve everyone though and we were soon sitting down to tuck in - it tasted delicious and there was plenty left over for seconds too. Kiwis definitely know how to BBQ...
