Our Year of Adventure
We were heading back to Puerto Varas today. We had booked front row seats on the 11:40am bus so we had luxury of a lazy morning at the hotel. The bus journey was comfortable and we had slightly better views because the sun had finally come out.
We had arranged to return to Casa Azul so it was easy to retrace our steps from the bus station, through the back streets, to the hostel in a few minutes.
It was pleasantly warm in Puerto Varas and we were able to walk around comfortably with just a hoodie. We wandered around the centre looking for money exchanges (we need to get Argentinian Pesos before going back over the border again), but they were all closed. The supermarket was open though so we managed to buy some breakfast stuff and snacks.
We dropped the shopping off at the hostel and walked down the lakeside to Bravo Cabrera, which was supposed to be a good bar/restaurant but was closed last time we tried. It was open today and we were the only ones in the place so we were able to get the comfy sofa by the window with a view over the lake and the volcano behind. We ordered some drinks while we read the dinner menu and David got a surprise when his beer came, it was a very nice looking but big 750ml bottle of craft ale at 7.2%. Kross 5 was brewed as an anniversary product and much stronger than a standard beer, but it was very nice all the same. The food was equally as good and while we ate, we had a nice view of the volcanoes as the sun set.
After dinner, we walked back along the lakeside into the town centre to a cake shop to buy some dessert to take back to the hostel. A couple of dogs joined us at the edge of town and David couldn't resist buying them a small treat too. The dogs are just so friendly in Chile and very well behaved, probably a lot more than a lot of pets in Europe or New Zealand. Without training, these dogs will walk perfectly at your heel without a lead, they know to wait outside shops without being told or being tied up. They never beg for food, they simply wait at a respectable distance and hope that you will offer them something.
