Our Year of Adventure
We were up early again but there was not as good a sunrise today. While we waited for the restaurant to open, we packed our bags ready for the trip back to La Paz.
After breakfast we checked out and walked down the cobbled road to the main plaza. We found a minivan/people mover that already had 2 people in it, so with us, it just needed one more before leaving. It was only Bs.30 each for the 2 hour trip which was very reasonable. It seems that everyone is allocated seats, which we didn't realise, and just took the middle row of seats. We had been assigned the back row which caused a bit a of issue with the last guy to get on. We weren't moving so the ticket lady either found 4 new passengers or persuaded the guy just to take the spare seat at the back (which he did albeit grumpily).
The drive back to La Paz was on the new road, which is perhaps the 2nd most dangerous road in the world. Despite being two lane asphalt, lots of bridges and safety barriers, then are still heaps of accidents and our driver took the precaution of pausing before joining the road and crossed himself.
We were making really good time up the valley although it's impossible to say what speed we were doing because, like every taxi in Bolivia, the speedometer is disconnected. As we reached the La Cumbre pass, the highest point on the route, he pulled over and told everyone to get out. Unfortunately it wasn't for a photo stop, he had a flat and had to change the tyre. It was freezing, there was snow around in the mountains and cold wind whipping past us. Luckily, the driver seemed to have experience of changing the wheels and was done pretty quickly.
We made it back to La Paz's Fatima terminal in pretty much 2 hours, even with the delay for the flat tyre. It took a while but we eventually managed to get a taxi to take us back to Arthy's Hostel.
It didn't take long to check in, get our bags from storage and drop them off in the room. David felt bit sick so he stayed back in the hostel while Maria went with Carlee and Andy back to Gravity to swap her t-shirt for a smaller one.
The three of them headed back to hostel via the Mercado Lanza to buy some fruit juice and filled potatoes. With the rain starting, it was going to be an afternoon in the hostel and the concensus was to watch Hunger Games 1 on DVD.
The rain eased off later and we all ventured out for dinner at La Cueva, the Mexican. With our Gravity tour, we got a voucher for free drinks at various restaurants and La Cueva was one them, so free margaritas came our way while we waited for our food. It was a really good meal again and we decided to have another drink before we left. The girls went for the safe option but Andy and David couldn't resist finishing off with a Pátron tequila.
