Our Year of Adventure
Despite paying $100 a night for the room, breakfast was, at first glance, the very typical and basic Argentinian affair - a small buffet table with coffee, toast and pastries. David noticed that a nearby table had some ham and cheese brought to them so he went off to the kitchen and asked for some too.
We took the shuttle to the airport a little after 10am with another couple who were on the same flight as us. The airport was still quite busy, the same as it was last night. We checked in with no problems and went through security straight away as we were advised by the check in staff. Being the busy season, we were warned it could take a while. It wasn't actually that bad compared to UK airports.
There wasn't a great selection of shops or cafes airside, but we had to spend the last of our pesos before flying out. It's not possible to exchange Argentinean pesos in Europe nor could we exchange them at the airport.
Everything that was on sale in the airport was priced in US dollars, but could be bought in pesos with their poor exchange rate. If the prices weren't overly expensive in dollars, they soon became grossly overpriced once converted to pesos. It was therefore easy to get rid of all our Argentinian pesos and the few Chilean ones we had too, the disappointment was just getting very little in return.
We made ourselves as comfortable as possible by the boarding gate and used the airport's free WiFi. A team of some sorts was making its way through the airport, people were stopping them and asking for photos. They were obviously quite famous in Argentina, but totally unknown to us.
The boarding for the flight was called and we managed to get to the front of the queue. Our seats were okay, we had chosen carefully after looking at SeatGuru.com to make sure there was no entertainment system taking up half the space under the seat in front.
Being a British Airways flight, they always have a good stock of London Gin and Schweppes tonic, they even had ice and a slice of lemon to settle us in for the 13 hour flight. It was a mid afternoon flight and they served dinner not too long after takeoff. The food was good and so was the wine. The wine kept coming after the meals were cleared away, to enjoy whilst we watched TV. They had a good selection of movies and the final season of How I Met Your Mother that we have been waiting for. They also had the Mrs Brown Christmas Specials, which had David laughing out loud and crying. Hopefully everyone else had their earphones in and didn't just hear his lone laughter in the plane.
Late in the evening we were served a Snack Box before the lights were put out for the night. David napped on and off, but because Maria can't sleep on a plane she kept herself amused with quite a few movies.
