After a recommendation from some fellow travellers at the Iguacu Falls we stopped at Hotel Lion D'Or in a rather swanky neighbourhood of Buenos Aires called Recoleta. Just next to us there happened to be an excellent restaurant where we experienced the best food yet since travelling.
This was a pretty good start to our BA experience and it got even better. We were able to sample the delights of Tango at an intimate show in town as well as on the street in the famous Boca area where houses are as colourful and crazy as the inhabitants of Buenos Aires. Although we were not tango'd out we decided we would also have a change of tempo and compare the tango shows with flamenco. Although not quite as stylish it was just as fiery with as much stamping and pouting as you could ask for. As well as this the singer had a wonderfully eery but beautiful voice to which the dancers stamped, swooned and swung.
Whilst in BA we were able to take a day trip to the neighbouring country of Uruguay. Unlike the flight we had had with Aerolineas Argentinas the service was impeccable with quick and easy check-in, friendly staff and refreshments provided: and the journey only took 50 minutes. The weather was not on our side: there was an almighty thunderstorm when we were there but we sheltered in the yacht club in Colonia and got chatting to the secretary there and stayed for about an hour talking about food, religion, schools, politics, language, everything (whilst the water crept under the door and filled the whole room!). He was a baptist and his father is a vicar and married him and his wife, just like my father had married my sister and her husband! He was really sweet and at the end of our shelter time he gave us a flag of the yacht club as a souvenir!
Although BA was not the most exciting place we were still trying to catch up after the excesses of Rio so it was ideal to slip into some cafe culture and just take in the sights and sounds of BA.
All of this prepared us for our next stop on the agenda: Lima.
