Well Osaka is much bigger than we expected, stupid really as it is Japan's second city after Tokyo, so we are not sure what we expected. The city itself is just a normal city, we didn't find any wonderous parts - maybe because we had already been marvelled by Tokyo.
There is a cool shopping and nightlife district called Dotonbori - which in essence is a tribute to Times Square, with loads of neon lights and funny shop signs (including moving giant crabs). Its quite a sight and interesting to walk around (for about 2 minutes or so, then the crowds get a little bit too much).
We also visited the Osaka Jo Koen castle in the centre of town which is surrounded by not one, but two seperate moats. Said to be a "must see" in summer when the cherry tree are in blossom, it was still a pretty walk. The Castle is more of a palace than anything and also a reconstruction - as most of Japan's castles are, having been destroyed through war or uprisings. Its cool to see though.
The highlight for us was the aquarium. Now we wouldn't usually visit an aquarium being tight on the moneyside, but this one is one of the biggest in the world and houses a Whale shark. It was worth the money too - it's massive and at the centre a huge tank that is home to countless sea creatures, including hammerhead sharks, a huge amount of rays, a gigantic Manta Ray and the highlight a 10ft whale shark. It was outstanding to see one just swimming around, it really captures the imagination seeing that it is 4ft longer than a great white. The aquarium also houses dolphins, penguins, otters, jellyfish and Megan's favourite Spider crabs (amoung other things). Defnately a must do if you are ever in Osaka. We leave this area tomorrow for Hiroshima - which should be very interesting.
